Keeping Your Computer Physically Clean

Dust is not only ugly, but it can also damage or even destroy parts of your computer. When it comes to office cleaning, making sure you clean your computer regularly helps you ensure it continues to work properly, to prevent expensive repairs.

Cleaning the keyboard

The likes of liquid, dust, food, and other such particles will often get stuck beneath the keys on the keyboard, which can end up with it failing to work properly. The basic cleaning tips below will help to keep your keyboard clean.

  1. Unplug the keyboard.

  2. Turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to dislodge dirt and dust.

  3. Use compressed air to clean between the keys.

Moisten a cotton cloth with some rubbing alcohol and clean the tops of the keys. NEVER pour the alcohol directly onto the keys.

Reconnect the keyboard once it is dry. If you are connecting it to a PS/2 port, you first need to connect it before you turn on the computer.

Dealing with liquids

If you spill any kind of liquid on the keyboard, shut down the computer and disconnect the keyboard as soon as possible. Then, turn the keyboard upside down, and leave the liquid to drain.

If the liquid is sticky, you need to hold the keyboard on its side beneath running water to rinse off the sticky liquid. Then, turn the keyboard upside down and drain it for at least 2 days before it can be reconnected. Please note the keyboard may not be fixable, however, trying the method above is your only option.
